Which ones would they buy again? How much would they pay? Anything they didn’t like?,” Jash says.
\n
After reviewing the responses, Jash and Blair decided on just three of their five favorite products for the initial launch of Pop & Bottle. In a broader sense, entrepreneurship is the process of transforming the status quo by solving the most pressing problems and pain points in our society, often by introducing an innovative product or service or creating new markets.
\n
Entrepreneurship is now a popular college major, with a focus on studying ideation, new venture creation, and profit driven models.
\n
What is an entrepreneur?
\n
An entrepreneur is someone who has an idea and who works to create a product or service that people will buy, as well as an organization to support that effort. An entrepreneur takes on most of the risk and initiative for their new business and is often seen as a visionary or innovator.
\n
Entrepreneurs are as diverse as they are dynamic. There are many different types of entrepreneurs—including small business owners, content creators, startup founders, and anyone who has the ambition to build a business and work for themselves.
\n
Common traits for entrepreneurs include:
\n
\n
Enjoy freedom and flexibility
\n
Are inventive
\n
Are goal orientated and ambitious
\n
Think creatively
\n
Are fearless
\n
Problem solvers
\n
High self initiative
\n
Understand basic finance principles
\n
\n
Pros and cons of entrepreneurship
\n
While aspiring entrepreneurs have the potential to earn massive fame and fortune by starting a successful business, entrepreneurship isn’t without its challenges. Here are some of the pros and cons.
\n
Pros of entrepreneurship
\n
\n
Work flexibility. Entrepreneurship means self-employment, which comes with the ability to set your own schedule and work where you want.
\n
Ability to follow your passion. If your innovative idea is related to your passions or hobbies, entrepreneurship enables you to make a career out of what you love.
\n
Total control. Because they own their own businesses, entrepreneurs have complete control of their entrepreneurial ventures, with the ability to make decisions quickly.
\n
Creativity. Without the burdens of bureaucracy common in large, mature companies, entrepreneurs can solve problems creatively and experiment often.
\n
Unlimited earning potential. As famous entrepreneurs like Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates show, a startup entrepreneur with a successful business idea can make millions or even billions of dollars.
\n
\n
Cons of entrepreneurship
\n
\n
Financial risk. Becoming an entrepreneur means putting money on the line for your idea. If it doesn’t work out, you’ll be responsible for dealing with disappointed investors and outstanding bank loans.
\n
Long hours. Between brainstorming new ideas, wooing potential investors, and managing the day-to-day operations of their businesses, many entrepreneurs work long and hard to make their dream a reality.
\n
Greater responsibility. As the leader of your own business, everyone will be looking to you for vision and direction, which can cause tremendous personal stress.
\n
High competition. Just because your business idea is innovative doesn’t mean you won’t face stiff competition, whether from established firms in your industry or other entrepreneurs looking to beat you to the finish line.
\n
Unreliable income. While successful entrepreneurs may see a big payday, it won’t happen overnight. In the meantime, expect lean times as you invest all of your income into growing your business.
\n
\n
What is the entrepreneurial mindset?
\n
Becoming a successful entrepreneur starts with bringing an entrepreneurial mindset to your business venture. The entrepreneurial mindset is a set of skills, beliefs, and thought processes you can bring to the task of building a new business. The main elements of this mindset are:
\n
\n
Curiosity. An effective entrepreneur questions everything, learns all they can, and is open to new and radical ideas, even if they contradict your most basic assumptions.
\n
Independence. There’s no precise roadmap to success as an entrepreneur. Turning a new idea into a successful business requires risk taking and an ability to plan your next move without hand-holding from others.
\n
Resiliency. Succeeding as an entrepreneur means not only enduring pressure and failure, but also learning and growing from those experiences.
\n
Persuasiveness. To raise money and grow their team, an aspiring entrepreneur needs to be able to confidently sell their business idea to what is often a skeptical audience.
\n
Focus on helping others. Entrepreneurs create value by solving problems for the people around them. The best entrepreneurs are focused on creating a positive impact, rather than making money.
\n
\n
Common entrepreneurship requirements
\n
Beginning a start-up as an aspiring entrepreneur generally requires:
\n
\n
A business concept or idea involving a product, service, process, or new technology
\n
People to support the work, whether as employees, vendors, or advisors
\n
A process by which the product or service will be delivered, or the technology will be developed
\n
Enough funding to support the development of the idea to the point that it generates revenue
\n
A peer reviewed business plan
\n
\n
In considering what kind of business to start, assess:
\n
\n
Your interests: Are any of your passions, hobbies, or interests ripe for innovation?
\n
Your background and experiences: How has your personal history prepared you for the challenges of being an entrepreneur?
\n
Your financial resources: Can you gather the necessary resources to get a given business idea off the ground?
\n
Unmet market needs: What business opportunities exist in your chosen industry or field?
\n
Problems you can solve: What challenges do your skills and knowledge prepare you to address in your external environment?
\n
Your network and connections: Which people in your professional network can help you along in your entrepreneurship journey?
\n
\n
How to become an entrepreneur
\n

\n
Becoming an entrepreneur isn’t as complicated as it sounds, and there are plenty of resources and inspiration all around you. Using these engagement metrics you can create a content strategy that will encourage channel growth.
\n
Here’s how to access YouTube analytics data from desktop and mobile.
\n

\n
Desktop
\n
\n
On your desktop, sign in to your YouTube account.
\n
Click on your profile icon in the upper right-hand corner, then select YouTube Studio.
\n
This will take you to your YouTube channel’s analytics dashboard. From there, either select Analytics on the left menu or GO TO CHANNEL ANALYTICS, located under the video thumbnails of your top videos.
\n
On your channel’s analytics page, you can toggle between the Overview tab, Content tab, Audience tab, and Research tabs to find the information you want.
\n
You can also find more details on individual video analytics and your channel if you select Advanced Mode in the top right corner of your channel’s analytics page.
\n
If you want to download a report, select the aspects you want to track in Advanced Mode, then select the download icon in the top right corner. You can download your report as a Google Sheet or a .csv file.
\n
\n
Mobile
\n
\n
Download the YouTube Studio app for your Android device or iPhone (if you don’t already have it).
\n
Open the YouTube Studio app and sign in to your account.
\n
This will take you to the app’s dashboard. Here, you’ll be able to see an overview of data like the number of subscribers you have, the number of times your channel has been viewed, and even the number of hours people have spent watching your videos. If you’d like to look at more in-depth data, select View More.
\n
\n
How to analyze YouTube videos
\n
1. Understand watch time
\n
There’s no denying that Views are an important metric for determining the success of a YouTube video.
\n
But while they’re one indicator of performance, Views alone won’t give you enough information to make significant improvements to your YouTube videos, nor does YouTube put a lot of stock in them, given the prevalence of clickbait tactics that often inflate view count.
\n
Instead, views should be analyzed alongside a more important metric that’s key to getting on the good side of YouTube’s algorithm: watch time.
\n
From YouTube’s perspective, watch time, or the estimated total minutes spent viewing your content, is more important than a raw view. The updated Analytics dashboard makes this clear by dedicating an entire section to this new, more telling metric of video performance.
\n
If you find that your watch time is low, consider going back to the drawing board and creating more engaging videos for your audience, or you might need to invest in better video editing software or a good video editing app for your phone to add some extra polish.
\n
However, watch time and views are really only useful indicators when analyzed alongside other data that can help you improve the discoverability and quality of your content, as we’ll explore further down in this post.
\n
2. Keep an eye on your real-time report
\n
YouTube verifies view count to remove spammy and low-quality views from the total. There’s often a two-day lag in the number of views that YouTube publicly displays and in your dashboard.
\n
That’s why the real-time report for your channel is essential for measuring the reach of your videos early on. This report gives you the estimated number of views from the past 48 hours and the past 60 minutes, across your channel or for specific videos.
\n

Source: YouTube

\n
YouTube’s real-time report isn’t just exciting to watch when you upload a new video or promote it through one of your owned or paid channels.
\n
Keeping an eye on this tab in the Analytics dashboard can also help you discover spikes in views that suggest someone has shared your video with a new audience on Reddit or another social network.
\n
These moments present good opportunities to stoke the fire and garner more traction for your video by engaging with the poster, thread, or publication before things go cold.
\n
3. Identify your traffic sources
\n
When analyzing your video’s reach, it’s important to figure out precisely where your viewers are coming from.
\n
In your YouTube Analytics panel, you’re presented with another graph displaying various traffic sources and the total amount per source on the Traffic Sources page. This reveals how your viewers are finding your videos.
\n
This report allows you to determine which traffic source most benefits you across your entire channel and for each individual video you create.
\n
Don’t just look at the number of views they’re generating—not all sources will give you the same quality of traffic.
\n
For example, if your video is attracting high-quality views via YouTube search, you can begin to implement ways to optimize your video or future content further to show up for the keywords people might use to discover your content.
\n
Use this view to determine which traffic sources are important to your video promotion strategy and which sources need to be worked on.
\n
\n
Read more: YouTube SEO 101: How to Build a YouTube Keyword Strategy
\n
\n
4. Determine your audience demographics
\n
To better understand your audience, head over to the Audience page of your YouTube analytics. These interactive graphs allow you to visualize who is consuming your videos, using dimensions like age, gender, geography, device, and more.
\n
Ecommerce product videos will almost certainly reach a portion of customers who were unreachable to you via conventional search engines. Reviewing the age and gender of your video audience may offer new information to build your future product videos upon.
\n
Many industries are not particularly bothered by the geographical variations in their video audience. A viewer is a viewer.
\n
However, as an ecommerce business, the location of your potential customers could be of great interest to you if you plan to reach them with targeted ads or content.
\n
To delve further into the geographic statistics, you can select each individual country, displaying a new age and gender graph for that particular country. Using this information, you can create location-specific videos in the future if you notice any geographic trends.
\n
5. Track your subscriber rate
\n
YouTube subscribers in an ecommerce context can be potential or existing customers interested in your products or niche of content.
\n
So it is also important to monitor the fluctuations of your subscriber base. This will allow you to understand the overall reach of your YouTube content as a whole, as opposed to a single video, and how each video contributes to gaining or losing subscribers.
\n
This one’s pretty obvious: The more subscribers you have, the more people there are to potentially see your channel’s video content through the Subscriptions stream on the YouTube homepage. Thus, the more exposure your products and brand will get.
\n
Using calls to action in the form of YouTube cards or a pitch that you record as part of your video can go a long way toward gaining subscribers.
\n
Aside from your subscriber rate, you can also calculate your subscriber ratio for a video by dividing the number of views by the net subscriber gain. If you’ve got a video that performs particularly well in terms of generating subscribers, consider investing more time (or money) in promoting it.
\n
6. Monitor comments
\n
Comments are a key component of audience engagement. Keeping tabs on who is commenting and what they’re saying can help you convert viewers into customers, or at the very least increase engagement for that video or other content.
\n
By clicking on the Comments tab of the YouTube Analytics section, you’ll see the frequency and dates of your comments and a section dedicated to displaying your total amount of comments on each video.
\n
While these numbers are interesting, the Community section is also useful for acting on opportunities to engage with your audience and get qualitative feedback.
\n
Look for chances to:
\n
\n
Delight your viewers with insight or an amusing remark
\n
Highlight any products or services you sell
\n
Direct viewers to other related content or resources you’ve created
\n
\n
It’s important to portray your brand as an approachable and engaging one. Try to respond to comments on your video in a helpful fashion. This will also help increase your total comments, a good indicator to viewers that a video is engaging.
\n
You can even pin one of your comments to the top to direct your audience to relevant parts of your website.
\n
Best YouTube analytics tools
\n
Of course, your built-in YouTube Analytics dashboard isn’t the only source of data you have at your disposal.
\n
Other third-party websites and tools can help you understand YouTube:
\n
\n
Social Blade: If you’ve ever wondered about your competitors, potential partners, or role models on YouTube, you can use Social Blade to gain some insight into how other channels are performing and compare them to your own.
\n
VidIQ: This Chrome extension displays a score card next to the video you’re watching on YouTube, offering in-depth insights at a glance to help you understand what works in YouTube as you go about using the platform.
\n
Google Analytics: This is a powerful analytics tool that provides a wealth of information about your audience. It monitors and analyzes the traffic to your channel and websites with your other YouTube videos embedded in them. Google Analytics gives you more detailed information on how users find you and how engaging users find your content within YouTube and your other websites.
\n
\n
Measure channel performance, grow your YouTube presence
\n
As a creator or a marketer, data is a gift you shouldn’t ignore. Otherwise, you’re shooting in the dark every time, unaware of whether you’re getting closer to or further away from your target. Use your YouTube analytics to improve your video strategy and turn your own channel into a success.
\n

\n
\n

\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
Read More
\n
\n
\n
\n
How to Display Your Instagram Handle on Business Cards
\n
How to Make Your Link in Bio Pop with Linkpop
\n
How to Create an Instagram Business Account
\n
How to Make the Most of Instagram Video with Posts, Stories, and IGTV
\n
How to Use Facebook Ads Manager- A Guide for 2023
\n
How To Set Up and Use the Meta Pixel in 2023 (Complete Guide)
\n
How to Use IGTV to Fuel Your Growth on Instagram
\n
What Is The Best Time To Post on Tiktok in 2023?
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
YouTube analytics FAQ
\n
\n
How do I find YouTube analytics?
\n
\n
You can see YouTube analytics by signing into YouTube Studio, then clicking the Analytics tab on the left sidebar. For brands, however, choosing the right TikTok video ideas is important to attract the right audience. From TikTok challenges to educational videos, explore these ideas in depth before you post videos to your brand account.
\n
1. Human moments
\n

\n
Get real with your followers, and don’t be afraid to break that fourth wall. It’s refreshing to see a brand’s founder take center stage and discuss the realities of social media.
\n
If you have something you want to share or discover something that inspires you, your brand’s audience will most likely love it too. Try sharing favorite book recommendations or the Netflix series you can’t stop talking about.
\n
You don’t need to talk to the camera to make your brand feel more human. Using images and captions can work just as well. Imagine you’re sharing with a friend, and keep it short and sweet.
\n
2. Trending and topical content
\n
It’s tempting to create content in advance, and this certainly works for other social media channels. When it comes to TikTok account ideas, it’s all about balance. Keep track of holidays and events and see what’s trending on TikTok at that time. Make sure you’re ready to react and create topical and relevant content.
\n
Topical content doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, sometimes simple posts are best! It’s just a few seconds long but was seen more than 100,000 times.
\n

\n
Trends can be even trickier, and they come and go quickly. They can’t recoup the costs of unsold goods that they either manufactured themselves or purchased from another company.
\n
In addition, storing dead stock costs money and takes up valuable warehouse space that could be used to house top-selling products.
\n
Ahead, you’ll learn what’s considered dead stock, and how companies avoid dead stock with various inventory management strategies.
\n
\n
Table of Contents
\n
\n
What is dead stock?
\n
Why is dead stock bad for a retail business
\n
Dead stock costs
\n
Causes of dead stock
\n
How to avoid dead stock
\n
How to get rid of dead stock
\n
\n
\n
What is dead stock?
\n
Dead stock, or obsolete inventory, is merchandise that’s never been sold to a customer. It often cannot be returned to the supplier because it’s outdated, out of season, or has little to no demand.
\n
For example, if a clothing retailer still has winter coats in stock after the winter season has ended, and consumers have shifted their buying toward spring clothing, those unsold winter coats become dead stock.
\n
An alternative definition of dead stock
\n
In inventory control and order management, dead stock has also come to mean products that are no longer available for sale. When used in that context, the phrase is usually spelled as one word: deadstock.
\n
Sometimes, merchandise that is no longer available is coveted simply because it can’t be found in stores. In those situations, it can sometimes be sold for a premium price.
\n
Sneakers, which are often sold on brand image more than function, are popular “deadstock” items that can be found for sale online and identified in searches as “deadstock.” Vintage apparel is also a popular deadstock category.
\n
A lot of dead stock ends up online. For example, you can find Nike deadstock through online marketplaces like Etsy, eBay, and Restocks.
\n
Why is dead stock bad for a retail business?
\n
\n
Capital investment: Dead inventory represents investment that’s not yielding returns. Money tied up in unsold inventory could have been better used elsewhere in the business.
\n
Storage costs: Storing products costs money, whether in a warehouse, retail store, or other storage facility. Dead stock takes up space you could use for products that are selling well.
\n
Depreciation and obsolescence: Products lose value over time. This is especially true for trendy or seasonal items, and for tech products that become outdated.
\n
Risk of damage or expiry: Unsold products are more prone to getting damaged, becoming obsolete, or even expiring if they have a limited shelf life. This devalues the stock even more.
\n
Opportunity cost: Dead stock could have been used to purchase inventory that sells well. Your bottom line could have been higher if the investment had been made in better-performing stock.
\n
Negative impact on cash flow: Dead stock can negatively impact cash flow, leaving less capital for other important areas such as business expansion or marketing.
\n
Impacts business analytics: Dead stock makes it difficult to analyze inventory turnover rates and sales forecasting, which hinders strategic planning. For example, Overestimating demand could lead to dead stock, reinforcing a vicious cycle.
\n
\n
Dead stock costs
\n
Let’s look at an example of why eliminating dead stock is important. Say you run a small clothing boutique and ecommerce store. You bought 200 designer winter coats at the start of the winter season for $100 each, an investment of $20,000. You were hoping to sell these coats for $200 each and make $40,000 in sales, which would be a net profit of $20,000 (excluding other expenses).
\n
However, now it’s the end of winter and you’ve only sold 100 coats, with 100 coats as dead stock. This is now $10,000 worth of stock that’s tied up in inventory that isn’t selling.
\n
\n
That’s $10,000 you can’t use to invest in spring collections, pay employees, manage utilities, or invest in marketing activities.
\n
You also have to find a place to store the unsold coats. Say you have to spend $200 per month on storage, that’s $1,600 for eight months of storage.
\n
If the coats aren’t in style next winter, you’ll have to sell the coats at a steep discount, say $75 each, which would only recoup you $7,500 of your initial $10,000 investment.
\n
\n
In general, the money associated with excess stock could have been spent elsewhere. Maybe you didn’t have the capital to offer a brand new spring collection, so you missed out on the profits from those sales.
\n
Causes of dead stock
\n
Here are some reasons dead stock inventory occurs:
\n
\n
Overbuying or overproduction: You can purchase or produce too much stock, anticipating a higher demand than actually occurs. If you have poor sales, you’re stuck with dead stock and lower profit margins.
\n
Poor inventory management system: Without effective systems for tracking and managing inventory, you’ll end up with poorly managed lead times and reorder points. This leads to over ordering and the accumulation of dead stock.
\n
Trends and seasonality: If you sell trendy or seasonal products, you can end up with dead stock when consumer tastes change or a season ends.
\n
Product quality issues: If your product has a defect or doesn’t meet consumer expectations, it may fail to sell, turning into dead stock.
\n
Inaccurate market forecasting: Incorrectly predicting consumer demand for a product can result in surplus inventory.
\n
\n
How to avoid dead stock
\n
If you don’t want to deal with dead stock in the first place, consider doing the following:
\n
\n
Use inventory management software to alert you to issues, so they can be addressed in a timely way.
\n
Order smaller quantities when offering new products until you know how they perform, even if the per unit cost is higher.
\n
Survey customers to learn what other products they want.
\n
Base new product offerings on industry and customer research rather than intuition or personal interests.
\n
Set reorder points to ensure you request the correct order quantity and prevent overstocking.
\n
\n
How to get rid of dead stock
\n
While some dead stock will need to leave storage in a garbage truck, there are ways to recoup some of the initial investment.
\n
Possibilities include:
\n
\n
Sell dead stock to close-out (like eBay) and liquidation retailers
\n
Donating to charity in exchange for a tax write-off
\n
Giving it away as a free gift with purchase
\n
Product bundling
\n
For apparel, selling dead stock to consignment stores
\n
Have a clearance sale and sell SKUs for cheaphttps://www.shopify.com/blog/what-is-dead-stock
\n
\n"}]},"page_header":{"background":null,"backgroundOpacity":100,"color":null,"fieldGroupName":"page_header","title":"Guide to Dead Stock","opacity":100,"position":"on","size":{"desktop":64,"tablet":null,"mobile":null},"spaces":{"top":null,"bottom":null,"leftright":null,"units":"em"}},"link":"/blog/what-is-dead-stock-definition-and-guide-2023"},{"id":"cG9zdDo2MzM4","title":"How To Design a Logo: A Step-By-Step Guide (2023)","date":"12.06.2023","slug":"how-to-design-a-logo-a-step-by-step-guide-2023","categories":{"nodes":[{"id":"dGVybTox","name":"General Articles"}]},"levels":{"nodes":[]},"acfPost":{"fieldGroupName":"acfPost","excerpt":"It will appear on your website, your products, your marketing, your in-store signage, and just about any other place where people interact with your brand. Goalposts vary depending on your industry, your audience, and your brand values. However, when you’re learning how to design your logo, there are industry agnostic rules.
\n
Make sure your logo design is:
\n
\n
Simple: Avoid all-singing, all-dancing logos with tons of color and tiny details. An overwhelming logo can put people off and ruin a first impression.
\n
Memorable: Your logo is often the first thing people will see. Make sure it’s memorable by using stand-out colors and an eye-catching design.
\n
Relevant: Your logo should reflect your brand personality and values. For example, you should avoid childlike fonts for a serious law firm.
\n
Timeless: It’s tempting to jump on logo trends, but doing this will make your brand identity look dated. Keep your logo timeless so you don’t have to redesign it every couple of years.
\n
Versatile: Your logo will be used in multiple places, from your website and emails to print collateral and packaging. Make sure it’s scalable, works in black and white, and is easy to read on different surfaces.
\n
\n
How to design a logo from scratch
\n
1. Define your brand identity: The first step to creating a logo design
\n
Brand identity design is a catch-all term for the visual elements of your brand, including your brand colors, your logo, and the way elements of your brand are designed. These visual elements work together to distinguish your brand identity in the minds of your customers.
\n
Your brand’s distinguishing features—what’s most important to you and what will be most recognizable to your customers—lie in the answers to these questions. Before putting your pen to paper, before choosing your logo colors and aesthetics, ask yourself who you are.
\n
Here are steps you can take to nail your brand identity:
\n
\n
Create a mind map of your brand values: Start with a central idea and diagram your thoughts by connecting keywords and related concepts.
\n
Reflect on your “why”: Ask yourself why you started your business, what values are important to your brand, and what sets you apart from the competition.
\n
Come together: Join forces with your team to go over your mind map and values. It helps to get a second (and third) opinion and identify patterns.
\n
Start conceptualizing: You don’t need to come up with a polished logo straight away. This activity can get your creative juices flowing so you can start to visualize the perfect logo.
\n
\n
2. Seek inspiration: How to find ideas to create a unique logo
\n
Getting started is often the hardest part of any creative activity. It’s good to have an idea, but sometimes the problem is having too many ideas at once. It can help to see what other brands are doing and get a feel for the kind of logos you like best.
\n
Here are some places to get inspiration:
\n
\n
Logo repositories: Browse logo libraries like Logoed, Logospire, and Logo Design Love. Create a file of your favorites.
\n
Check out the competition: What are similar brands doing with their logos? It can help to see if there’s a common theme in your industry.
\n
Hashtags: Scroll design-related hashtags on Instagram. Try #logo, #logodesigns, and #logodesigner to get started.
\n
\n

The #logo hashtag on Instagram has fresh design inspiration every day.

\n
3. Determining logo style: Which style is right for you?
\n
The style of your own logo should go hand-in-hand with the overall feel of your brand. It helps to think about what kind of experience you want customers to have: Do you want them to feel nostalgic? Relaxed? Inspired? Warm and cozy?
\n
Here are some design aesthetics you can use in your logo.
\n
Classic
\n
Classic logos stand the test of time. They bypass trends and help you reach a broader audience. The colors are usually simple and elegant, which makes your business appear reliable and professional.
\n
\n

A classic logo design made using Shopify’s free logo maker.

\n
Vintage
\n
Vintage (or retro) logos inspire a sense of nostalgia. They often feature worn-look text, illustrations, and a muted color palette.
\n

A vintage logo design made using Shopify’s free logo maker.

\n
Modern
\n
Modern logos are fresh and minimalist. They often feature a lot of white space, minimal details, and simple lines, creating a trendy, cool feel around your brand.
\n

A modern logo design made using Shopify’s free logo maker.

\n
Fun
\n
If your brand sells quirky products to a young audience, consider a fun logo style. They’re characterized by colorful illustrations and unconventional fonts and have a positive feel to them.
\n
\n

A fun logo design made using Shopify’s free logo maker.

\n
Handmade
\n
Handmade logos insinuate your brand is independent and leans heavily toward handcrafted goods. These logos often feature handwritten fonts, organic shapes, and line-drawn illustrations.
\n

A handmade logo design made using Shopify’s free logo maker.

\n
4. Choosing a type: A comprehensive guide to logo types
\n
Whether you’re designing your own custom logo from scratch or using a logo template, it’s a good idea to understand the different types of logos.
\n
Monogram logos
\n
Also known as letter marks, monogram logos are made up of letters, often the brand’s initials. Think NBC, GE, HBO, NASA. Monogram logos are simple, but help people remember the company behind the logo.
\n
For example, which is easiest to remember and say: IBM or International Business Machines?
\n

IBM’s monochrome logo.

\n
Wordmarks
\n
A wordmark logo (or logotype) is a font-based logo that shows the company name. Think Visa, Disney, and Jeep.
\n
Wordmark logos work best for companies with catchy names. The memorable name and expressive typography create a strong brand association. They are also adaptable and can be used across different marketing and advertising materials while representing your business.
\n

Disney uses a wordmark logo.

\n
Pictorial marks
\n
Pictorial marks are graphic-based logos. Whenever you see one, you immediately recognize it as the logo of a company. The Apple fruit logo, Instagram camera logo, and the Target bull’s-eye logo are all examples of this.
\n

Target’s logo is made from a pictorial mark.

\n
Abstract logo marks
\n
An abstract logo mark is conceptual. It consists of a symbol that’s made just for your company. Your logo doesn’t relate to anything that exists in the world, like a bird or an apple. It’s designed to express the uniqueness of your brand. Think Airbnb, Microsoft, and Pepsi.
\n
\n

Airbnb has an abstract logo.

\n
Abstract logos are hard to create if you have no design experience. It’s best to hire a professional logo design consultant who can translate colors and shapes into meaningful marks for your business.
\n
Mascots
\n
A mascot logo represents your business through a character. Often, they are colorful, cartoonish, and fun. A mascot logo humanizes your brand and acts as an ambassador for it.
\n
Companies selling to kids and families, as well as esports teams, should use these designs. Popular mascot logos you’d likely recognize are Mr. Peanut by Planters, Mickey Mouse, or the M&M’s spokecandies.
\n

The M&M’s logo incorporates mascots.

\n
Combination marks
\n
A combination mark combines a wordmark or lettermark with a pictorial mark, abstract logo, or mascot. You then integrate them together to create the logo.
\n
Combination marks help people associate your company name with a picture or icon immediately. Widely recognized combination marks include Ralph Lauren, Burger King, and Converse.
\n

Burger King’s logo is made from combination marks.

\n
5. Deciding on a color scheme: Understanding the psychology of colors for logo design
\n
Color plays an important role in decision-making. One study showed that up to 90% of purchasing decisions are made based on color alone, while another found color can dramatically impact someone’s mood.
\n
Your logo’s colors will end up on your website, in-store signage, social media feeds, marketing emails, and every other place where a user interacts with your brand. There’s no color that’s universally “better,” but each color does say something different. You want to make sure you’re saying the right thing.
\n

Color psychology in logo design is used to emphasize certain product or corporate traits for specific colors

\n
With that in mind, let’s go over the psychological effects of certain colors:
\n
Brown
\n
Brown is often associated with all-natural ingredients, homemade goods, and freshly baked treats. It’s also the color of tree bark, sticks, autumn leaves, and rich soil, so it can give an outdoorsy aura to your brand.
\n
Orange
\n
Like a roaring fire, orange radiates warmth, energy, and passion. It also tends to invoke summer—especially when paired with lighter blues and soft greens.
\n
Yellow
\n
Orange’s high-saturation sister, yellow, also gives off light, energy, and warmth. But if orange’s warmth is a glowing fireplace, yellow’s is the intense heat of a midday sun. It brings fun, positive vibes to your brand.
\n
Green
\n
Green can invoke an organic aura that brings to mind lush rainforests, eco-awareness, and a sense of calm.
\n
Pink
\n
Pink is a soft gentle color often associated with femininity. It has broader connotations of kindness, romance, and love.
\n
Red
\n
Red is bold and unforgiving. It stands out, which is why it’s become such a dependable color in branding. Like pink, red tends to invoke romance. But whereas pink’s romance is tender and gracious, red’s romance is passionate, loud, and carnal.
\n
Purple
\n
Purple is a shadowy, mysterious stranger with an almost magical magnetism. Given that purple dyes historically have had a reputation for being rare and expensive, there’s no mystery how purple has come to be associated with wealth, excess, mysticism, magic, and indulgence.
\n
Blue
\n
Blue tends to invoke feelings of trust, ease, and peace. That said, blue has also been shown to be the least appetizing color. Try to avoid it if you’re selling food.
\n
Black, gray, and white
\n
Sometimes the best color for your brand is no color at all. Shades of black, white, and gray tend to invoke a sense of calmness, balance, or clarity.
\n
Using multiple colors
\n
Most logos are monochromatic. Single colors are easier to coordinate with, and using only one color will simplify your brand’s other graphic design elements. Mono logos also can be reimagined in different colors for different purposes.
\n

FedEx uses different colors to define different departmental logos.

\n
The FedEx logo is typically displayed in blue and orange. However, the company has created alternative color logos for specific departments.
\n
Here are some tools you can use to experiment with color palettes:
\n
\n
Paletton: Paletton’s color wheel lets you create color schemes using easy, interactive sliders.
\n
Coolors: Coolors lets you generate random color harmonies, lock colors you want to hold in your palette, and adjust other colors collectively to create a fully customizable palette. You can also generate palettes from uploaded images.
\n
Colormind: Colormind is especially good for web designers because it includes an easy-to-use tool for achieving readability and color harmony on webpages by previewing colors on the same page in real time as adjustments to the palette are made.
\n
ColorSpace: ColorSpace is best for developers, as it automatically generates CSS code to include the color palette you’re creating on your webpage.
\n
Canva’s color palette generator: Canva generates color schemes randomly or from images. But what makes Canva’s tool unique is its ability to search for color palettes via keywords.
\n
\n
6. Picking a font: How font choices affect brand perception
\n
Your logo may not include any text, but much of your graphic design will, including your web copy, signage, and a host of other branded materials. For the sake of consistency, it’s important to consider which typefaces your brand plans on using in the logo design process, even if you’re not using them in the logo itself.
\n
Typeface vs. font
\n
The terms “typeface” and “font” are used interchangeably in most contexts, so it’s common to assume they’re synonyms. However, there’s an important distinction: a typeface is a characteristically distinct set of typographical symbols and characters, often divided into variant sets, like italic and bold. Each of these variant sets is a font.
\n

The difference between a typeface and a font.

\n
The four basic type styles and when to use them
\n
Some logo fonts focus on style, some on historical significance, and some on endless splintered subcategories. The most common system categorizes fonts into four types:
\n
\n
Serif fonts: Serif is the oldest type style and dates back to the Latin alphabet. It’s characterized by the “feet” at the end of each stroke. Serif typefaces are associated with history and tradition and are often used by luxury brands to invoke a sense of elegance.
\n
Sans serif fonts: Sans serif type is more modern and often used in a digital capacity because it’s easier to read on a screen. These typefaces are associated with simplicity and minimalism and are often used to convey a sense of innovation and modernity.
\n
Script fonts: Script typefaces are derived from handwriting or calligraphy. They’re fluid and often used in whimsical contexts to portray a sense of personality, romance, and passion.
\n
Decorative fonts: Decorative typefaces forego typographical conventions and can take on a wide variety of moods. They are stylistically diverse and should be used sparingly—too much of a good thing can quickly become tacky.
\n
\n
When choosing your font, also consider the line thickness, whether you’ll use italicized or regular, and the mood you want to convey.
\n
7. Outlining a logo shape: What you need to know about logo shapes
\n
The shape of your final logo design is just as important as the colors and fonts you use. We subconsciously respond in different ways to different shapes, whether it’s a circle or a square. Here are some common logo shapes and what they might signify:
\n
\n
Circles and ovals: Anything circular projects a positive message, usually related to community, friendship, and love.
\n
Squares: Squares signify practicality and stability. They also imply balance and strength—but be mindful that they can appear cold and uninviting if paired with a monochrome color palette.
\n
Triangles: Triangles are often associated with science and power and tend to reflect masculine traits.
\n
Vertical and horizontal lines: Who knew that lines could convey so much? We subconsciously associate vertical lines with strength, while horizontal lines often indicate community and calmness.
\n
\n

Hetime’s logo is in a circular shape to represent a clock face. This reflects the age-defying face creams the brand sells.

\n
8. Refining the results: How to fine-tune your logo design
\n
The creative process is different for everybody. Some may start with sketches, while others might jump right into Adobe Illustrator. The drafting phase involves a lot of trial and error, so don’t get discouraged if things aren’t working.
\n
At a certain point, you’re going to start to feel like you can’t even recognize letters from shapes or good logos from bad. When this happens, it might be time for feedback. Feedback is incredibly important to the creative process because it’s the only method creators have of “testing” their ideas.
\n
For the best feedback, ask specific questions about how each person perceives your brand based on the company logo. Being told your logo is “good” or “bad” won’t be helpful, but knowing how your brand comes across will be.
\n
Here are some questions to ask when getting feedback:
\n
\n
What’s the first thing that sticks out to you?
\n
How would you characterize my brand?
\n
What do you remember most about the logo?
\n
Is there anything you’re confused by?
\n
If you could remove one aspect of the design what would it be?
\n
\n
It’s hard for someone to be certain of how they’d react to your brand in real life, so avoid questions like, “Would you buy this?” or “Is this interesting?” More specific questions will garner more specific answers and better feedback.
\n
Making a final decision: Tips to choose the best logo
\n
Now you have your feedback and your initial designs, it’s time to decide on your final logo design. Easier said than done. When choosing the right design, think back to the elements that make a good logo and ask yourself:
\n
\n
Is my chosen logo simple and memorable?
\n
Is my chosen logo versatile? Can it be used in multiple ways?
\n
Does my chosen logo reflect my brand values?
\n
Does my chosen logo stand out against competitors and speak to my target audience?
\n
Will people be able to tell what my chosen logo is in less than five seconds?
\n
\n
Putting your logo to work: Tips to integrate your logo into your business
\n
Ready to show the world your brand new logo? Here are some tips for integrating it seamlessly throughout your business.
\n
\n
Add it to your email signature.
\n
Use it as your profile picture on all social media accounts.
\n
Incorporate it into product packaging (both internal and external).
\n
Include it on business cards and any print materials.
\n
Splash it across the front of your brick-and-mortar store.
\n
Add it to invoices and transactional emails.
\n
\n

Magic Spoon’s logo perfectly complements the brand’s bold packaging designs.

\n
Golden rules of logo design: Create an effective logo
\n
Your logo is the face of your business, so it needs to reflect your brand, your audience, and your products all in one simple, memorable graphic. Easy—at least, it is if you follow these logo design tips.
\n
\n
Lay the groundwork upfront. Start by digging into your brand values and defining your entire identity before jumping straight into the logo design.
\n
Sketch more than one initial idea. It’s highly unlikely the first design you come up with will be the best. Come up with a few logo symbols and ideas that you can refine later on.
\n
Understand color and shape psychology. Color and shape play an important role in your logo. Make sure you understand why you’re using specific colors and what message it sends out about your brand.
\n
Avoid trendy designs. You don’t want to redesign your logo next year. Choose a timeless design that isn’t based on current trends.
\n
Lean on audience feedback. Ask your customers and external voices for feedback on your designs so you’re not creating in a vacuum.
\n
\n
Top 5 free logo design makers: The best online logo design tools
\n
If you can’t justify hiring someone to design your logo, you’re left with two options: design a logo yourself or use a free online logo generator.
\n
If you’re short on time and need a professional logo designed ASAP, then a free logo generator is your best bet. There are plenty of adequate logo creators online, but beware—low-quality logo creators generally result in low-quality logos.
\n
Here’s how to design a logo using a free tool.
\n
1. Shopify’s free logo maker
\n
Shopify’s free logo-design tool caters specifically to ecommerce businesses. This information should be gathered through research and discussions with the client.
\n
Brainstorm and sketch ideas. Start by generating a wide range of ideas and sketching them on paper. Don’t worry about the details at this stage, but rather focus on the concept and overall feel of the logo.
\n
Choose a concept. Once several ideas have been generated, select the strongest ones that align with the brand’s identity and eliminate any that do not meet the criteria.
\n
Create digital designs. Using graphic design software, create several logos based on the chosen concept. These initial designs should include simple black-and-white versions to focus on the shape and composition of the logo.
\n
Refine the design. Review the digital designs with the client, gather feedback, and make necessary revisions to the logo. At this stage, color, font, and other design elements can be added.
\n
Obtain feedback and tweak. After selecting the best design from the refined options, request feedback from a test audience. This feedback can be used to improve the final version.
\n
Finalize and deliver. Once all feedback has been incorporated, finalize the new logo design and deliver it to the client in a variety of file formats for future use.
\n
\n
By following these steps, a well-designed logo can be created to accurately represent and capture the essence of its brand.
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
Where do I start to design a logo?
\n
\n
\n
Here’s how to design a logo in five steps:
\n
\n
Define your brand. Before starting the design process, it’s important to have a clear understanding of your brand and its values, target audience, and message. This will help you create a logo that represents your brand and communicates its essence effectively.
\n
Research. Conducting research on your competition and industry will help you gain insight into how to design a logo. Look at other logos in your industry, identify common design elements and colors, and find ways to differentiate your logo from others.
\n
Sketch and brainstorm ideas. Start by sketching out rough ideas and concepts. Brainstorm with your team or a designer to come up with different design directions. This stage is all about exploring creative possibilities, so don’t be afraid to experiment or take risks.
\n
Refine your design. Once you have a few strong design concepts, refine them by choosing the best elements and combining them into a cohesive design. You can use design software like Adobe Illustrator or Canva to create digital versions of your logo.
\n
Test and iterate. Test your logo with your target audience and gather feedback. Use this feedback to make any necessary changes and iterate until you have a final design that you are happy with.
\n
\n
Overall, designing a logo requires creativity, research, and a clear understanding of your brand. By following these steps, you can create a logo that represents your brand effectively and resonates with your target audience.
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
What are the 3 rules of good logo design?
\n
\n
\n
The three rules of good logo design are simplicity, memorability, and versatility.
\n
\n
Simplicity. A good logo should be simple and easy to understand. A complex design can confuse the audience and make it difficult for them to remember the brand. A simple design with clean lines and a limited color palette can help the logo stand out and be more recognizable.
\n
Memorability. A good logo should be easy to remember. A logo that is memorable can help customers associate the brand with the logo, which in turn can help the brand gain more customers. A memorable logo should have a unique design that is easily recognizable and can be distinguished from other logos.
\n
Versatility. A good logo should be versatile in its use. It should be able to adapt to multiple mediums, such as print or digital media, without losing its impact. A versatile logo should also be scalable, meaning it should look good at any size or resolution. A logo that can be easily modified for different purposes can save the brand time and money in the long run.
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
What are 5 rules for creating a good logo design?
\n
\n
\n
A good logo design is crucial for any business or brand that wants to stand out from competitors and leave a lasting impression on customers. Here are five rules to follow if you want to design your logo:
\n
\n
Keep it simple. A simple logo design is easier to recognize, memorable, and versatile across different mediums. Avoid cluttering your logo with too many elements or complicated designs.
\n
Make it memorable. A good logo design should be unique, distinctive, and easy to remember. Aim to create a logo that stands out and can be recognized even without the brand name.
\n
Choose appropriate colors. Colors have a psychological impact on people, and different colors can evoke different emotions. Choose colors that align with your brand values and target audience. Also, keep in mind that a logo should still look good in black and white.
\n
Ensure it’s scalable. Your logo should be scalable and easily adaptable to different sizes and mediums without losing its quality or legibility. This ensures that your logo remains effective across all platforms.
\n
Keep it consistent. Your logo is a representation of your brand, and it needs to be consistent across all platforms and mediums. Ensure your logo is used in the same way across all branding materials and that the design remains consistent. This increases brand recognition and builds trust with customers.
\nhttps://www.shopify.com/blog/how-to-design-logo
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n"}]},"page_header":{"background":null,"backgroundOpacity":100,"color":null,"fieldGroupName":"page_header","title":"Logo Design Steps","opacity":100,"position":"on","size":{"desktop":64,"tablet":null,"mobile":null},"spaces":{"top":null,"bottom":null,"leftright":null,"units":"em"}},"link":"/blog/how-to-design-a-logo-a-step-by-step-guide-2023"}],"totalCount":138,"currentCategorySlug":"","pageTitle":"Blog"}},
